NECO not ready for computer-based test – Registrar
The National Examinations Council, NECO, is currently considering the adoption of computer-based tests (CBT) for its examinations, as revealed by the NECO registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, during a recent media chat in Abuja. However, due to the complexities of the various examinations conducted by the NECO Board, a smooth and immediate transition from paper-based tests to CBT may take some time.
NECO, being the largest examination body in terms of the number of examinations conducted, faces challenges in migrating to CBT. With approximately 1.5 million students examined annually in 76 different subjects and over 150 papers, the complexity of these exams, especially the essay components, requires careful consideration before implementing CBT. Wushishi emphasized the need for experts to thoroughly analyze the intricacies of the exams before making the transition.
While acknowledging the importance of gradually incorporating CBT into NECO exams, Wushishi suggested starting with areas such as the common entrance examination, which is multiple-choice based. He highlighted the necessity of examining the details of this process to ensure a successful integration.
Furthermore, Wushishi shared that NECO has examined 34 million Nigerian youths to date and has conducted trial testing exams to identify the most suitable items for its examinations. This meticulous approach demonstrates NECO’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and quality of its assessments while exploring the possibility of transitioning to computer-based testing in the future.
